Proportions
The visual balance between the lengths, widths and volumes of pieces in an outfit.
What does Proportions mean?
In fashion, proportions describe how the sizes and shapes of garments relate to one another and to the person wearing them. A long coat over narrow trousers creates a different balance from a cropped jacket over wide-leg trousers. Neither is automatically better; the relationship changes the overall impression of the outfit.
What it looks like in real life
Try the same wide-leg jeans with a tucked shirt, then with a long untucked knit. The jeans did not change, but the visible waistline and the amount of volume above it did. That is a proportion change. A different shoe or hem length can shift the balance again.
What people often get wrong
Proportion advice often gets reduced to rigid body-shape rules. You do not have to make yourself look taller, slimmer or more symmetrical for an outfit to work. A deliberate oversized look can be as successful as a closely fitted one.
How to use the idea
Photograph a familiar outfit and change just one element: tuck the top, roll a sleeve or swap the outer layer. Compare what the eye notices first. Use the version that feels right for your movement, occasion and taste.
