Silhouette
The overall outline or shape an outfit makes when seen as a whole.
What does Silhouette mean?
A silhouette is the broad shape created by clothing on the body. Fashion descriptions use the word to talk about outlines such as straight, fitted, A-line, column or oversized. You can notice a silhouette before you see a print, seam or fabric detail. It is useful for understanding why two outfits with similar pieces feel different.
What it looks like in real life
A long straight dress creates a column-like silhouette. Put a cropped jacket over it and the outline gains a break near the waist; add an oversized coat and the outer shape becomes fuller. The dress remains the same, but the outfit reads differently from a distance.
What people often get wrong
Silhouette does not mean body type. It describes the clothing's outline, not a judgment about a person's shape. The same person can enjoy several silhouettes, and comfort, movement and occasion may matter more than an abstract styling rule.
How to use the idea
Look at an outfit photo from a few steps back and squint slightly. Notice the widest point, the length of each visible layer and where the outline changes direction. If you want a different feel, change one garment's volume or length before replacing the whole look.
