Clothing and care

Circular fashion

An approach to clothing that keeps garments and materials useful for longer instead of treating disposal as the default ending.

What does Circular fashion mean?

Circular fashion describes ways to reduce waste by designing, using and caring for clothing so it stays in use, can be repaired, and may be reused or recycled when appropriate. It is a direction for the clothing system, not a single label that proves an individual product has no impact. Material choices, durability, repair access and what happens after use all matter.

What it looks like in real life

A jacket that you wear for years, mend when a seam opens and pass on when it no longer fits has a longer useful life than one quickly discarded. A resale listing or fiber-recycling claim may be part of a circular system, but neither automatically offsets buying more clothes than you will wear.

What people often get wrong

Circular does not mean impact-free. Recycling can be limited by mixed fibers and construction; resale can still encourage unnecessary purchases. The first practical step is often to make better use of clothes that already exist, rather than replacing a wardrobe with products marketed as sustainable.

How to use the idea

Before buying, ask how often the piece will be worn, how to care for it and whether common damage can be repaired. Keep a small mending habit, look for secondhand when it meets a real need, and share or resell useful pieces you no longer wear.
