Cost per wear

The purchase price of a clothing item divided by the number of times you wear it.

What does Cost per wear mean?

Cost per wear is a simple way to think about the value you get from clothing over time: price divided by wears. A $60 shirt worn 30 times costs $2 per wear on that narrow measure. The number can help compare realistic use, but it is not a complete measure of quality, environmental impact or personal satisfaction.

What it looks like in real life

Consider a $120 coat worn 60 times and a $30 occasion top worn twice. Their cost per wear is $2 and $15 respectively. That does not mean the coat was automatically the right purchase or the top was wrong; it shows how much anticipated use matters when you are deciding what to bring home.

What people often get wrong

The calculation usually leaves out cleaning, repairs, resale value and the cost of replacing something you already own. Future wears are a guess, not a guarantee. A low cost per wear also cannot make unnecessary buying sustainable by itself.

How to use the idea

Estimate wears honestly from your routine, then revisit the estimate after a few months. If a piece is rarely used, try a new outfit combination or repair before treating the spreadsheet as a reason to buy more.
