Color palette

A set of colors you choose to use together in an outfit or across a wardrobe.

What does Color palette mean?

A color palette is the collection of hues that gives an outfit or wardrobe a recognizable relationship. It might be mostly neutrals with one vivid accent, several shades of one color, or a deliberate contrast. The point is to make choices easier to combine, not to restrict yourself to colors someone else says you should wear.

What it looks like in real life

A person who often wears indigo denim, cream tops and brown shoes already has the start of a palette. Adding a cobalt cardigan can echo the denim while adding energy; a coral scarf could provide contrast. Both choices can work, depending on the mood and pieces around them.

What people often get wrong

A palette is not the same thing as seasonal color analysis, and it need not be permanent. Lighting, fabric texture and how much of each color appears can change an outfit more than a strict list of approved shades. A favorite color that sits outside your usual palette can still have a place.

How to use the idea

Photograph five outfits you genuinely like and note the repeated colors. Choose two or three dependable base colors and one or two accents, then test combinations with clothes you already own before shopping for a missing shade.
