Dress codes

Smart casual

A flexible dress code between everyday casual clothes and more formal dressing.

What does Smart casual mean?

Smart casual asks for an outfit that looks considered and neat without requiring formalwear. The exact balance depends on the place, occasion, time of day and people involved. A blazer, refined knit, clean trousers, dress or tidy shoes can all help, but there is no single mandatory uniform.

What it looks like in real life

For a relaxed restaurant, dark jeans, a shirt and loafers might fit. For a work event, tailored trousers, a simple top and a jacket may feel safer. The two outfits share a polished finish but respond to different rooms. Checking the invitation or venue is more useful than following a universal list.

What people often get wrong

Smart casual does not always mean jeans and a blazer, and casual does not mean careless. Sneakers can sometimes work when clean and understated; elsewhere they may be too relaxed. The dress code is contextual, so uncertainty is normal.

How to use the idea

Build a comfortable base from pieces you own, then adjust one element up or down: trade a T-shirt for a shirt, add a jacket, or choose neater shoes. If the event matters and the wording is vague, ask the host rather than buying a new outfit on a guess.
